The Pieta ("The Pity" in English) is a famous work by Renaissance sculpture Michelangelo, who carved it from Carrara marble in the late 1490s. The sculpture depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother, Mary, after the Crucifixion. The Pieta was in the first alcove chapel we came to inside St. Peter's Basilica following the path taken by tours. The chapel is located in the northeast corner of St. Peter's. It and the Pieta can easily be missed as the expanse, grandeur, sounds, colors, beauty...of the basilica can overwhelm you.
