According to the Farmers' Almanac, an '“Onion snow” is a term particular to the state of Pennsylvania originated by the Pennsylvania Dutch culture and language, and refers to a snowfall that occurs after the spring onions have been planted, and comes right as they are sprouting.'

By that definition the three inches of wet puffy snow that fell over night in central PA was too early to be an onion snow. Mother Nature, however, did made April Fools of us. The snowfall was very beautiful, but it also was literally a pain in the back to shovel.
