Yesterday, Ag Advocates, a student organization in the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences that advocates for agriculture sciences and supports college and campus activities, held its annual agricultural sciences information day outside the Penn State Creamery. Many of the displays from various agriculture student clubs included livestock. Another was a not-so-alive but life-size plastic cow that kids could milk - water poured into a port on the cow’s back flowed down to a synthetic udder. The one non-College of Ag display was two draft horses with troopers atop from the Pennsylvania State Police Tactical Mounted Unit. Both were beautiful animals. Their mere size attracted a lot of attention. The house on the left is a Percheron 18 and a half hands high. The one on the right is a Friesian Draft house, 16 hands high. The troopers indicated that draft houses were an excellent choice for the work of the unit because they are very patient, especially in standing for extended periods, and ride very smoothly. Most horses used by the unit are donated and go through an extended evaluation period before being accepted.
