Moxie Falls

Moxie Falls are the highest water falls in New England. It is located 35 miles due west of Greenville, a couple of miles east of a place on US 201 called the “The Forks” (where the Dead and Kennebec Rivers join and US 201 crosses the Kennebec). The direct route to the falls is a dirt road and safest in a car at about 20-30 mph. The alternative routes are clockwise or counter-clockwise loops - the shortest 70 miles, though about the same in travel time. The falls are on a stream (Mill Brook) that flows out of Moxie Lake (Pond) into the Kennebec. The Kennebec upstream from The Forks is known for challenging sections of whitewater. That notwithstanding, the site of the upper segment of Moxie Falls as it rolls over massive rocks and then the 90 foot drop of lower Moxie Falls is well worth the trip by any route. The 1 mile hike back to the falls is of moderate difficulty, though sections of bedrock in the trail and the wood viewing platforms can be slippery when wet (it was foggy with a misty rain when we went). On the way back to Greenville traffic was stopped on US 201 by a yearling moose that wondered across the highway. In the evening we took a three-hour “Moose Tour” from a local outfitter during which three other moose were sited – another yearling, a cow and a young bull (pictured – taken through the windshield of a van at a distance).
