Mt. Kineo

Mt. Kineo is a 1,700 foot mountain and island essentially in the middle of Moosehead Lake. The mountain was contoured into it signature wedge shape by glaciers. The top slants upward toward south, where the mountain ends in a blunt face that stands like a wall over a flat area of glacial sediment on which there is a golf course. The mountain is a state park and golf course private property. There are two trails to the summit: the 0.9 mile Indian Trail up the face, and the 1.1 mile more inland Bridal Trail, which is a less technical route, but still difficult (it in essence is a steep rut with numerous large stone and root through which water runs down the side of Mt. Kineo after storms). The two trails join near the summit at which here is a clearing with great views toward the SW – where we ate lunch and decided to ended our hike. At the summit there is a fire tower that is no longer in use, but can be climbed for a panoramic view of the area. Lakeside, there also is a trail that encircles the island. The “shuttle” boat to and from the island operates May through October on a schedule. (There is limited access to the island via a causeway on the East, but it is not for general use.)
