Stonehenge is a well-known prehistoric monument in southwest England that dates back about 5000 years. The most notable feature is a circular arrangement of huge standing stones with a number of horizontal connecting lentils. The ring of stones is surrounded by a bank and ditch, and includes burial mounds. It appears to have been constructed over a 1500 year period, but its purpose remains open to speculation – these range from an astronomical site, to a healing center, to an alien landing site. The most popular theory is that it was a burial ground and temple.

For most of modern history, the current monument area was in private hands and fell (no pun intended) under disrepair. That was until October 26, 1918 when Sir Cecil and Lady Mary Chubb made it a gift to England after purchasing the 6000 acre plot a few years earlier. The BBC News story about the so-called birthday can be found at:

Stonehenge was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. The photos included here are from 2008. They were taken on a typical cloudy English day with a Canon AE-1.
