Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a collection of three falls on the Niagara River that runs between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, the border between Canada and the US, northwest of Buffalo. The largest of the falls is the Canadian or Horseshoe Falls, obviously on Canadian territory. The American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, of course, are on US territory. Bridal Veil can be mistaken as a section of the American Falls.

The falls originate from the Glaciers that created the great lakes 10,000 year ago. They continually move south was they dig back the gorge walls. While not the highest falls with drops of 160 to 180 feet, they are known world-wide. The falls and surrounding area were a famous place to honeymoon after WW II. That notwithstanding, the falls are magnificent both in sight and volume.

On our visit in 2003, I was fortunate to get some unusual shots of the Falls: The above photo, taken from the top of an incline plain behind the Canadian Visitor Center, gives the impression that the earth have opened up the Visitor Center is about to be sucked in to an abyss. In the distance across the top, is the line of inlets on the diverted tunnel that send water through electric generators, first proposed and developed by the inventor Tesla.

The above second photo was taken at ground level from the Canadian Visitor Center. It shows the rainbow that is visible in the mist of the falls on sunny days.

The above third photos, shows the Maid of the Mist boat tourists can take for a close up and wet view of the Canadian Falls. The American Falls is visible in the distance and behind that is Rainbow Bridge that crosses from the US (right/east) to Canada (left/west). The top of Bridal Veil Falls can be seen on the right end of the American Falls before it goes behind the rainbow.

An evening dinner at the top of Skylon Tower, overlooking the falls as it is lit in various colors, is very nice. The photos were taken with a Canon AE-1, so the quality is less than ideal.
