They're Back

The 11/2/18 Blog Entry speaks about a three-year traffic jam in State College resulting from the reconstruction of US 322/Atherton Street, which is the major north-south thoroughfare through town and a major entry and exit route for Penn State students, faculty and staff. It is not that the roadway was not in need of reconstruction. The last full reconstruction (e.g., drainage, gas, water, sewer, curbs, sidewalks, utilities) was done in 1951. The issue is the three years of disruption caused by each section being reconstructed.

After a winter hiatus and with the arrival of day-light-savings-time, a crew was out replacing water, and sewer at Park Ave. and Atherton St., one of the two busiest intersections in town, while another crew worked on the drainage system, sidewalks and curbs 100 yards down the hill (to the right in the photo). And a half mile beyond that Verizon is replacing communications cable.

Only nine months until the projected completion date for this section. But also, 12 months until work probably begins on the next two- or three-mile section, this one through the west sides of campus and the borough’s business district. More fun, fun, fun to come! (Photos taken with a iPhone 6.)
