Until the early 1600s, the tiny island in Lake Maggiore (an alpine lake NW of Milan, Italy) known today simply as dell'isola Bella (the “beautiful island”) had only a fishing village on it. In the 1630s an Italian baron began construction of a palace and gardens dedicated to his wife on the island. The palace and gardens were a continuing family project across centuries as well as a well known social venue for European rich and famous. Today, the palace and gardens are a very popular tourist attraction. The white peacocks that roam the immaculately kept garden are a surprise to see. These two white peacocks posed for us in 2015.
