Four Masterpiece Sculptures

In our travels, we have been privileged to see four masterpiece sculptures. Two were Greek in origin and housed in the Louvre in Paris - Winged Victory of Samothrace and Venus de Milo. Winged was carved about 200 BC by an unknown sculpture (This photo is a scan of a 35mm print).

Venus de Milo is thought be have been carved about 100 BC by Alexandros of Antioch (This photo also is a scan of a 35 mm print).

On a trip to Italy, we saw two of Michelangelo's masterpiece sculptures. The Pieta, which he carved between 1498 and 1499, is in the Sistine Chapel.

The other was the Statue of David, which Micheelango carved between 1501 and 1504. It is in the Galleria dell'Accademia (Gallery of the Academy) in Florence. Michelangelo carved both the Pieta and David in Carrara marble from the quarries in Miseglia north of Pisa.
