Ginger 2007-2020

Ginger joined our family in January 2016. We found her at the Indiana County Humane Society (ICHS). ICHS knew nothing about Ginger given she was left at their door one October morning. As a result, she was isolated during her three month stay at ICHS in an individual cage. All they told us was she was about 9 years old and she seemed to prefer women, which turned out to be an understatement. Sue connected with Ginger and we adopted her.

While with us, Ginger never would spend more than a minute on Sue's lap. Ginger's domain was our bed, where she would let Sue pet and scratch her, but again only on Ginger's terms. Sue had to go to the ER once and Urgent Care another time with deep scratches or bits to her hand. We inferred that her former owner was a bedridden women and Ginger was left at ICHS after her passing. It took a couple of years before she would let me pet her, but only on the bed, at arm's length and for very short periods. Our son-in-law, Troy (who appears to be a "cat whisperer") had the most success interacting with her. Years before COVID-19, we settle into life at a distance with Ginger.

About a year ago, our vet determined that Ginger had intestinal cancer, at which point she began to let me scratch and pet her, but only at her request on the bed and for short periods. Medications and finally steroid shots extended Ginger's life until earlier this week, at which point we noticed a significant decline in her quality of life. She was put to sleep by our vet today.

Ginger had her idiosyncrasies due to her prior life, but underneath she was a lovely cat and we will greatly miss her.
