She Did It Again

This is Sue's latest quilt creation, a queen size quilt top made for Jane to her specifications. - design and colors of the top and the color of the backing (not shown). These were sent to Minnesota last month where batting will be added and all three layers will be machine quilted together. That will be done by a former State College resident who moved her machine quilting business there a year ago. Upon its return, Sue will complete the quilt by binding the edges. (If you are interested, I will add photos from the quilting and binding processes.)

By my rough count, Sue has made over 40 quilts of various geometric designs and sizes since we moved to State College 36 years ago. Initially, she quilted the smaller quilts and Amish women in the Big Valley area near Lewistown were hired to quilt the larger ones. But since trying machine quilting on a quilt she needed by a particular date, she has used that process exclusively because of the uniformity, strength and predictable timeline, though hand quilting is much more highly prized. But always, the design is traditional and geometric - that has to be the math teacher coming through. So what has Sue been sewing since sending the quilt off to Minnesota? ...COVID-19 face masks for our extended family and United Methodist Women.

5/8/20: To Jane's and Sue's surprise, the quilter sent three photos of the quilted quilt at mid-day.

5/25/20: Memorial Day turned out to be the perfect day to bind the edges. Being able to maneuver the king-size quilt during the binding process meant using the kitchen table and a portable sewing machine.
