911 Call from Down Deep (9/5/20)

Phantom Ranch is the only lodging “below the rim” of the Grand Canyon. You can get there only by hiking or taking a mule train 6,000 ft down to the bottom of the canyon, or by rafting on the Colorado River. Bright Angle Trail is a popular route from the southern rim down into the canyon to the ranch.

On Bright Angle Trail about one third of the way down is a Scandinavian-type dry toilet station. We were surprised to find a 911 call box on the preceding bend in the trail. Behind some nearby bushes and running vertically on the rock face was a bundle of electric and phone cables that run down to Phantom Ranch. If you look carefully at the photo below, you can see one of those wires running up the post of the phone box.
