A Few Good Clocks 1/15/21
I have been interested in clocks for at least 50 years. I have built them, collected them and refurbished them. After running out of room in our house for another antique clock and our children each saying "two is enough," I started rebuilding clocks for charity events. That process typically started with a search of antique stores for empty clock cases that appeared to have rebuild potential. Clock faces/dials, movements (typically battery driven, some with a pendulum), hands, case hardware and emblems were found at online suppliers, with wood stains, glass, and miscellaneous items secured locally.
In 2012, 2013, and 2014 the clocks pictured below were donated to the United Methodist Women for their annual charity auction. The last one was made from a piece of walnut fire wood that I cut in half lengthwise (The mirror image of that clock was given to the friend who donated the piece of walnut from his firewood pile).

The principal of the Ohio high school at which I taught chemistry and physics was well known in the community for the beautiful grandfather clocks he built from local hardwoods when school was not in session. I designed and built my first clock in the evenings of my second year in the school's wood shop using local cherry. The mechanical movement, face and hands were sourced from Germany.
