Common Problem 2/5/22

This blog entry was inspired by Rachael Maddow, who in early February was exposed to COVID and had to broadcast from home to protect co-workers. Surprisingly, she and MSNBC were totally unprepared for this contingency. For the three days before a planned hiatus form her show, Rachel broadcast from home. The setting was drab but the lighting was terrible, to say the least. One would think this emergency situation would have been anticipated. Moreover, the lighting challenges are one many people around the world have faced and resolved as working from home became commonplace with meetings held online (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet) during COVID.

As have others, Sue and I have faced the challenges getting the lighting right for video conferences, The above two photos are examples. The resolution for us, given our home computer is more-or-less stationary in our home office where there is a south facing window, were two inexpensive adjustable video conferencing lights ($15 total on Amazon) and the willingness to search for the best lighting arrangement before each video conference. Prior to each video conference we find the best balance between the natural light coming in through the window, the room lights, and the color and brightness of the two video conferencing lights.

The west facing window is a constant challenge, but overall the end product is a significant improvement (even with my reddish skin tone).
