Mauna Loa, on the Island of Hawaii, is the largest volcano in the world. It recently awakened after four decades, first with subterranean earth quakes and now with lava flows from fissures in the northeast zone. No property and lives currently are at risk, but evacuation plans are ready.

When we visited the islands, including Mauna Loa, in 2013, it was hard to envision the mammoth mound was a volcano because of its very broad atypical shape (top photo), no strong sulfur smell, and only a few visible steam plumes, at least in the southern zone.

The following USGS site is a source of dramatic photos of the current Mauna Loa eruption.
