Wednesday Reprint 9/14/22

This photo shows the Colorado River deep in the west side of Grand Canyon National Park, as it flows toward Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam about 100 miles to the west "by the way a crow flies." The river, however, takes a much less direct path out of the park and through Grand Canyon National Monument. Because of the depth and width proportions of the Grand Canyon (6,000 ft at its deepest and 18 miles wide at the max) and the rambling path the Colorado River takes, there are a limited number of places along the south rim where the river can be seen.

See my 9/7/22 blog entry about the "bathtub rings" left by the Colorado River in Lake Powell (east of this point) and Lake Mead (as noted, to the west of this point).
