When Not in Rome 5/25/21

London, or Londinium as it was known to the Romans, was a strategically important port in the Roman Empire. In the first century a mound and ditch type wall replaced the original Roman fort. In turn, that wall was expanded and replaced by a defensive stone wall in the second century. But by the middle ages the city had expanded beyond the wall and by the 18th century, much of the wall had been dismantled or incorporated into buildings. Still, centuries later a few freestanding remnants still can be seen. For example, Tower Hill Garden north of London Tower (in fact, just across Tower Hill Street).
